Prepare yourself
- Check the forecast & weather conditions
- Plan your route
- Check road conditions and closures
- Give yourself extra travel time
- Dress for the weather
- Have an emergency plan
Prepare your vehicle
- Install winter tires
- Winterize your vehicle (have battery, belts, hoses, antifreeze, tires, brakes, heater, defroster and windshield wipers inspected)
- Have a winter survival kit
- Non-perishable foods
- Blankets, extra clothing and footwear
- Battery jumper cables
- Windshield scraper and snowbrush
- Shovel, traction mat, sand or kitty litter
- Candle and matches
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Reflective triangle
- Wait for your vehicle to completely defrost
- Be sure to fill your windshield washer reservoir with winter washer fluid
- Keep your fuel tank more than half full
Drive for the conditions
- Match your speed to road conditions
- Accelerate and brake slowly
- Avoid rapid maneuvers
- Leave more space between vehicles
- Keep sunglasses on hand for when driving towards the sunrise or sunset
- Drive with headlights on in storms
If visibility is not well enough pull over to a safe location and turn on your hazards.
Be cautious when approaching winter road maintenance equipment. Visibility may be limited so remain a safe distance. When passing an emergency vehicle slow down and move over when safe to do so.
